Last Week of School!
It's hard to believe this is the last week for our 5th graders! We hope to make it a special one with a lot of things to look forward to- including the much anticipated 5th grade show! Here is a brief overview of what this week will look like:
Monday:
- 5th Grade Fun Day (team building activities, Subway lunch, choice of 1 of 4 movies)
Tuesday:
- Pool Party at Frontier

- Final art class (rescheduled from last week)
- 5th grade show performance!

Math: Tuesday's math will be cancelled due to the Jazz Assembly from 9:15-9:45. Wednesday we will review Unit 8 and on Thursday we will have an open note test, which will conclude our math classes for the year.

Reading/Novels: PARCC assessment on Monday/Tuesday during this time. Wednesday we will work on Comprehension Toolkit Lesson 19, which focuses on differentiating between interesting and important facts in texts we read. Students will continue to work on their novels with their small groups. 1 activities is due each week, and daily work with thinking tracks are required.
Science/Social Studies: We finished our Energy Unit last week (ask students for their Quick Check quizzes- in their accordions). We will finish off the year with Social Studies Chapter 17, which highlights various people of the west.

Writing: Students should be done with their final drafts of their 3rd final piece this year. Please look for a rubric early next week (students self-assessed too!). We will begin to talk about persuasive writing and students will get the opportunity to choose a prompt they are interested in writing.

Reading/Novels: We will continue to learn about strategies to help us become stronger readers using various strategies learned through the Comprehension Toolkit. Students will continue their book club work in which they are expected to keep daily notes and reflections and weekly choice projects. Students also hold their own book talk discussion sessions 2x a week. Ask your child to explain what they are doing in class.
**No MAY letter, but there is a project. Remind your child about their Google Presentation on an award winning book.
Science: We will be finishing up our energy unit by learning about light bulbs & the differences between energy efficient bulbs and various wattages.

Week of May 5, 2014
Math: This week we will learn how to determine fractions of fractions, multiply fractions, and multiply fractions and whole numbers. This covers lessons 8.4-8.7.

Writing: We will begin typing our final drafts of our fictional pieces of writing, as well as revise/edit them. Students will be doing this on GoogleDocs. In grammar, we will learn about adverbs that compare.
Reading/Novels: Using the Comprehension Toolkit, we will continue to learn how to use Fact/Question/Response Charts to make sense of nonfiction they read and pick out the key facts/details. We will also learn how to use an FQR chart when reading historical fiction, using the story "Unbreakable Code" from the Treasures series.
Since we have completed our novels unit, students will now begin a book study based on a novel of their choice. I will present 6 different options, and they can choose their top 3 books to read. I will do a brief book talk on Monday, so students can determine their interest.
May Genre: Students must select award-winning books to read this month. They will then be expected to create a GooglePresentation on it. There will be no monthly letter.
Science: Students will get their Quick Check back from Friday. We will learn more about conductors/insulators and test various materials to see how well they insulate water bottles. Students will then get the opportunity to bring in materials they wish to test and create a bottle they believe will be very well-insulated.
Special Events:

- Butterbraid pick-ups will be Thursday.
- Additional music rehearsals for the 5th grade show will be Monday 11:15-12:15 and Thursday 1:30-2:15.

Week of April 28, 2014
Math: Students will get their tests back from Unit 7 & will be expected to correct them and get a parent signature. This week we will begin Unit 8, which will go back to fractions: comparing them, adding/subtracting mixed numbers.
Writing: Students will continue to practice making dialogue meaningful, and correctly punctuating it. Grammar will focus on adverbs. On Friday, we will have a Coding lesson in the LMC, instead of writing.
Reading/Novels: Using the Comprehension Toolkit, we will learn how to use Fact/Question/Response Charts to make sense of nonfiction they read and pick out the key facts/details. We will use National Geographic, Time for Kids, and other nonfiction articles to support our learning this week.
This is our final week of Novels Study with our current group of students. My class will have an end of the unit test.

Science: Students had a Quick Check(short quiz) last week and will get that back on Monday. We will learn about how heat is transferred through an experiment on Monday and graph the results on Tuesday. On Thursday we will do an experiment on conductors to see which materials are good/bad conductors of heat.

Week of April 21, 2014
Math: We will finish up the remaining lessons from Chapter 7 and review through Wednesday. We will take the Unit test on Thursday/Friday (to allow enough time, if needed). My math class will MAP test on Tuesday at 9:15.
Writing: Students will work on replacing weak verbs with strong verbs to show what their characters do/think. They will also learn how to punctuate/format dialogue and how to use dialogue effectively to show their character's traits. Grammar will focus on using the adjectives good/bad appropriately.
Reading/Novels: Using the Comprehension Toolkit, we will learn how to develop questions to guide our reading and understanding. We will use National Geographic, Time for Kids, and other nonfiction articles to support our learning this week.
This is our 3rd week of novels, in which we switch classes. My group, reading Worth, will read through Ch. 18 this week.

Science: We will discuss our energy logs, which should have been completed this weekend. We will read Ch 1 and complete notes (they help guide the reading for each chapter). Students will be instructed to take simple notes that will help them study. Students will create energy wheels with 3 examples of each type of energy (8 total forms). We will then discuss energy transfers and go through stations in which students will describe the transfers that take place with various objects.

Writing: We are working on Book 3 (the last book for the year) in the WEX program. This unit really tries to get students to focus on describing characters in a moment using SHOWING details. Our goal is to work through lesson 6 this week. Grammar will focus on adjectives that compare (-er/-est).
Reading/Novels: Last week, students selected a poem they wanted to analyze independently for an in-class assignment. This week, they will compare/contrast their poem with a partner. Additionally, they will continue to code the text or annotate some classic poems. My reading class/ Ms. Patton's reading class will be cancelled on Weds. due to our visit to Thomas Middle School.
We will also begin a new unit of novels. Students will switch teachers for this. I will be teaching "Worth" a book that ties nicely to what we are learning in Social Studies. We will do vocabulary practice, writing prompts, and frequent comprehension checks.

Writing: Students will get their Response to Fiction essays back on Monday. We will begin Book 3 on Tuesday, which is a unit on writing short fiction. Students will use pictures as inspiration for their characters, and will create stories using mundane situations.
Reading/Novels: We will be using the Comprehension Toolkit to help us analyze poetry and analyze poems by Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson. Students will learn how to annotate the poems and use a sheet to help guide their thinking. We will start novels next week! We will also be reading National Geographic to look for text features and analyze their purpose.
Don't forget the MARCH letter is due tomorrow! (it was optional to turn it in before break)

Math: Students will get back their Unit 6 tests and Open Response portion. We will go over everything and make sure all questions are answered. Students will also be taking a Quarter 2 Assessment in the computer lab on Tues/Weds to see how well they have retained concepts we have covered thus far in the school year. We will do some problem solving and preview the concepts for Unit 7. Unit 7 will cover addition/subtraction of integers & the order of operations (P.E.M.D.A.S)

Writing: Students will complete the final drafts of their Response to Fiction piece.
Reading/Novels: We will have a dress rehearsal for the Wax Museum on Monday. Be sure students have their buttons prepared by Wednesday! We will finish up the Wax Museum projects, portfolios (which you can look over with your child over Spring Break), and will begin poetry analysis with the comprehension toolkit. We will look at poems by Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, and Kaye Starbird.

Math: We will have math only on Monday/Tuesday of next week. We will be focusing on finding common denominators for addition of fractions.
Writing: Students will continue to work on their final draft of their Response to Fiction essay. (2 paragraphs describing a main character's traits).
Reading/Novels: We will be working on the Wax Museum projects during our reading time, when we are not testing for ISAT. The Wax Museum is where students get the opportunity to read the biography of an influential person in history (no celebrities/sports figures), research them, and then eventually portray that person for the school/parents at the end of March. (March 19th... mark your calendars). This will count as their monthly book report project. Students will also be expected to write a monthly letter about their historical figure.

We will be working on a project in which students have to think of an object/item that requires 3 parts to function, similar to the 3 branches of government. Math: We will be working on 6.5, 6.6, 6.8, 6.9 and problem solving. We will cover topics including sample size, frequency tables, using benchmarks, and finding common denominators.
Writing: We will work on lessons 14, 15 & 16 and a close reading lesson using the book,"The Liberation of Gabriel King". Students will begin working on their final paper for this unit.
Reading/Novels: We will be doing practice extended response writing and comprehension questions. We will also look at a variety of genre passages and focus on comprehension.

Math: We will be working on Unit 6. Look for a Family Letter in your child's math section to see the key concepts that will be covered. We will aim to complete lessons 6.1, 6.3, 6.4 and problem solving. We will skip around a bit, as we covered a lot of the same information in Unit 5 on data.
Writing: We will work on lessons 12, 13, 14 & a close reading lesson using the book,"The Liberation of Gabriel King". Students will be continuing to use text evidence to show character traits.
Reading/Novels: We will be doing a practice extended response Tuesday/Wednesday. On Thursday & Friday, we will do Comprehension Toolkit lesson 10 which gives students strategies for determining the meaning for unfamiliar words using context clues. Students will practice in pairs & independently. They will also have time to work on their February projects.

Math: This week we will finish lessons 6 & 7, the final two of the Hands-On Equations unit. We will do some review on Tuesday, and have a test on Wednesday. We will also do a couple days of problem solving and practice how to show our work and describe our steps.
Writing: We will work on lessons 9, 10, 11, and 12 using the book,"The Liberation of Gabriel King". Students will be continuing to use text evidence to show character traits.
Reading/Novels: Students should have finished their novels last week & turned in their final extended response to them. For the next couple weeks we are going to focus on non-fiction texts and responding to them in writing. We will also be using the Comprehension Toolkit lessons that discuss inferencing and differentiating between facts and opinions.
Our February Genre is... NON-FICTION! Start looking for non-fiction books that interest you, challenge you, and are grade-level appropriate.
